Paxil, also known as Paroxetine, is a prescription SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) that allows serotonin to circulate throughout the body longer, which helps to lessen the symptoms of depression or other low serotonin disorders for which the medication is taken. Paxil is used to treat a variety of mental health disorders, including depression, social anxiety disorder, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post traumatic stress disorder. The antidepressant was approved for use in the U.S. in December of 1992.

Recently Glaxo Smith Kline, the manufacturer of the drug released a study which shows that the likelihood of serious birth defects occurring when the drug is taken by pregnant women during their first trimester is greatly increased. The FDA states that Paxil has been associated with twice as many cases of severe birth defects as compared to other antidepressants which were evaluated in the study. Varying reports would suggest that taking the medication during any part of a pregnancy may result in serious birth defects.

There are a variety of birth defects which may be caused by the use of Paxil, including:

  • Craniosynostosis-resulting in an abnormally shaped head
  • Heart related defects
  • Omphalocele-affecting the intestines or abdominal organs
  • Included in the patient handout for Paxil is this information:

"If this medication is used during the last 3 months of pregnancy, infrequently your newborn may develop symptoms including feeding or breathing difficulties, seizures, muscle stiffness, jitteriness, or constant crying. However, do not stop taking this medication unless your doctor directs you to do so. Report any such symptoms to your doctor promptly."

This is not the first time that there have been serious side effects related to the use of Paxil. The drug has also been linked to an increase in suicidal and homicidal thoughts and tendencies among children, adolescents, and adults. Although the antidepressant is used by tens of millions of people, it was only approved by the Food and Drug Administration to be used by adults, and is not approved for the use of people under the age of eighteen, although many minors have been prescribed the drug.
